MATADOR – A POEM BY GABRIELA MARIE MILTON

Art: Bullfightย (Spanish:ย Suerte de Varas) is an 1824 oil painting byย Francisco Goyaย

MATADOR

in Salamancaโ€™s golden square,
Where ancient stones remember pain,
The crimson sun, the dust- my reign

Red is my dress , the crowd ignitesโ€”
A sea of faces, hope and dread.

The bull, a shadow forged in night.

And you, my matador, in shining thread,
The capeโ€”a flick, a whispered prayerโ€”
Red as the roses on the grave.
The dance of deathโ€ฆ

Now I scribble words in lonely Sundays,
Echoes of bull fights in Salamanca โ€ฆ

      1. All is now good, Thank you Gabriela. I had an operation for the removal of a brain abscess which necessitated a 6 week stay in hospital, but I seem to have made a full recovery, and published a book, “Passing Through: Some Thoughts on Life and Death”, which captures my experiences through poetry. All the best. Kevin

  1. Ooh, I LOVE your matador poem. Have you read The Brave Bulls by Tom Lea? It’s about bullfighting in Mexico. I learned a lot about matador culture from reading it.

  2. The narrator as both lover and witness can only add to her horror and the loss. Well done, Gabriela.

    1. Thank you so much dear Gerald. Itโ€™s great to hear from you. Warm wishes and much gratitude to you ๐ŸŒน

    1. Thank you, Bo. Mexico did not ban it. In fact, it is very popular in Mexico. Mexico issued a ban on cartels that have anything to do with it.

It’s cruel indeed. However, I am “glad” that the European Union cares more about fish (they got to the Portuguese – they eat too many sardines, to the Spanish that they kill the bulls, and to the Romanians that they apparently kill pigs during X-mas. Not to get too political here, but what about the good of their citizens, who are human beings? Just saying.

    1. Thank you from the bottom of my heart dearest Lauren ๐Ÿ™๐ŸŒนโค๏ธ
