Traditional Japanese poetry and classical haiku long championed a strict, objective distance—using nature as a silent, detached mirror for human experience. However, the Japanese master Kobayashi Issa shattered this convention by injecting his own ego, domestic poverty, self-deprecation, and bleeding parental grief directly into his verse. Centuries later, I find that this radical commitment to unvarnished human truth serves as the very heart and foundation of my concept of the unmasked haiku.

Parallels in Confessional Immediacy

When comparing Issa’s most devastating and personal fragments with my contemporary unmasked haiku, a striking structural and philosophical kinship emerges. Both traditions strip away polite conventions, decorative seasonal tropes (kigo), and superficial sweetness to expose raw, unmediated emotional realities.

To understand the lineage of this aesthetic, one need only look to Issa’s ultimate cry of parental loss following the death of his infant daughter:

露の世は露の世ながらさりながら

(Tsuyu no yo wa / tsuyu no yo nagara / sari nagara)

and yet… and yet…

The Buddhist doctrine told Issa that human life is fleeting—a temporary drop of morning dew. Philosophically, he understood it; humanly, his heart broke anyway. That final phrase—and yet…—is where classical detachment shatters. It is the exact threshold where the unmasked haiku lives: in the refusal to let intellectual distance or decorative formulas mute the raw voice of human pain.

Consider how this line of continuity flows directly into my contemporary unmasked haiku:

Radical Exposure of Vulnerability: Issa laid bare his grief and flaws without protective literary barriers. In Issa’s fragment, he acknowledges the philosophical impermanence of existence (world of dew), yet openly rejects stoic acceptance (and yet…). Similarly, my contemporary unmasked haiku thrusts the reader immediately into claustrophobic, deeply exposed human moments—stripping away social armor and emotional pretense.
The Echo of Childhood and Isolation: Themes of abandonment, fragile youth, and solitary existence recur across both works. Issa spent a lifetime examining children left to navigate a harsh world alone, echoing the quiet gravity found in solitary modern spaces.
The Weight of Ma and Silence: Both traditions rely heavily on the aesthetic of ma—the pregnant, meaningful silence between lines. Issa’s and yet… relies on the pause to convey what formal language cannot express, just as my contemporary unmasked haiku uses strict minimal phrasing to let interior weight land without decorative explanation.

Conclusion

By rejecting the safe distance of traditional, purely objective nature poetry, the unmasked haiku successfully preserves the serious, meditative essence of the classical tradition while boldly stepping into modern emotional realities. In doing so, it serves as a direct spiritual descendant of Issa’s fearless, bleeding humanity.

On the Unmasked Haiku

Traditional haiku often asks us to step back—to observe the falling leaf or the leaning shadow, using nature as a quiet, objective mirror for human emotion. There is an exquisite craft in that restraint, perfected by classical masters like Matsuo Bashō and Yosa Buson, whose work sought spiritual stillness and painterly detachment.

Yet, the history of the form also carries a deeper, more intimate current.

Even among the traditional Japanese masters, the mask occasionally slipped. Kobayashi Issa famously broke from detached reverence, filling his verses with raw, autobiographical grief, wry humor, and the unpolished ache of personal loss. Decades later, Masaoka Shiki revolutionized the art form by championing shasei—”sketching from life”—demanding that poets abandon rigid, artificial conventions to capture unvarnished reality.

An unmasked haiku takes this lineage to its absolute conclusion. It strips away the remaining disguises of distance, objectivism, and polished metaphor. Instead of looking outward at the landscape to reflect what lies within, it brings the raw, subjective human experience directly into the light. It centers an unvarnished “I,” laying bare vulnerable personal truths, immediate emotional states, and the unfiltered weight of daily life.

To see that mission recognized on such a grand scale is a moment I will treasure forever.

Q: What inspired you to pursue a career in your industry?

“I discovered my poetic voice after my mother’s passing, a loss that deeply shaped me and led me toward writing. However, my love for language began much earlier. As a student, I was captivated by poets like Rimbaud and Baudelaire, whose work revealed the beauty and mystery within words. Their influence inspired me to transform emotion into art. Founding Literary Revelations became both a professional pursuit and a tribute to my mother—a space where creativity, healing, and global connection come together.”

Q: Tell us about any obstacles you have encountered and how you have overcome them.

“The journey of a poet and independent publisher is rarely linear. I have faced many challenges, but I view obstacles as opportunities for growth. Each difficulty strengthened my resilience, sharpened my creativity, and reinforced my commitment to my vision.”

On Power, Motherhood, and Defining Success

Q: What does the word power mean to you?

“Power is culture. It shapes identity, preserves history, and fosters connection. By nurturing culture, we create a lasting impact that empowers future generations.”

Q: Can you describe a moment when you first felt truly empowered?

“I think I realized my power when I became a mother. If I can create life, I can create everything. In that moment, I felt empowered, beautiful, and happy—like the universe had gifted me infinite strength. Motherhood awakened a sense of creativity and resilience within me, reminding me that I am capable of remarkable transformations. It was then that I truly understood my own capacity to shape the world around me, boldly and unapologetically. It was my son that gave me power and resilience.”

Q: How do you define balance in your life right now?

“It is a work in progress, much like any ongoing struggle for harmony. I often reflect on the beauty of Michelangelo’s unfinished works, where each statue left incomplete still yearns for perfection. My own journey feels similar—no matter how much I strive, true balance remains elusive, always just out of reach. Yet, I find meaning in the pursuit itself, embracing the imperfections along the way.”

On Legacy, Breaking Stereotypes, and Empowering Others

Q: What legacy do you hope to create through your work or actions?

“As the founder of Literary Revelations and a writer myself, my dream is to leave a legacy built on the preservation of diverse cultures through the written word and the arts. Protecting cultural heritage ensures that stories, traditions, and wisdom continue to inspire future generations, fostering understanding and unity across communities.”

Q: What’s one stereotype or misconception about women in your field that you’d like to see change?

“There is a misconception that writing about personal emotions diminishes professionalism. This belief often discourages women from expressing themselves openly. I believe authenticity is a strength, not a limitation.”

Q: If you could empower one person reading this magazine today, what would you want them to know?

“If I could empower one reader today, I’d echo Simone de Beauvoir: define yourself outside of patriarchal structures. Do not limit your potential to social expectations—break barriers. Change the world by daring to lead and shaping your own destiny with courage and authenticity.”

at my side, aiding me to maintain a constant rhythm
of breathing, ensuring that none of my movements tore me
away from the dozens of wires and tubes. I knew that my
agony was required in exchange for the myriads of joys my
son would ultimately have; my suffering was the price I was
paying for his happiness.

The nurse, dressed in a white gown, moved from one
monitor to the next. Then she left. I was alone. Yet was I
alone? I felt another presence—something ethereal, sweet,
intoxicating. Layer by layer, I felt as though I was reclaiming
a forgotten inheritance. Through the window, I could see the
black rain hammering the night. I was drenched in a scorching
sweat, feeling like a piece of ice thrown into a volcanic river.
The agony escalated until I thought it crossed the threshold
of the bearable. I was sure I was going to die. Seconds after,
in a flash of clarity, the truth revealed itself: neither the nurse
nor anyone else gave a damn about my survival. That night I
took sole custody of my son’s life, in whose name I committed
myself to endure everything.

What’s wrong with us devouring each other? God gave up the fight, and God says that the mightier should crush the weaker. On the table was a pineapple, and a knife was stuck in it. The pendulum chimed. It was 6:30 am. The Captain turned his back to me, rummaging in the box with cigars. He took them one by one, sniffing them. I tried to look away from the knife, but I couldn’t. In seconds, I lived through dozens of possible futures. I could have picked up the knife; I could have waited for him to turn around… I saw him already full of blood, from head to toe, slumped on the marble floor, dying… Twisted on the floor, the white floor full of blood… in that vision, it seemed to me that he was muttering: the mightiest must crush the weakest. It seemed to me that his gasp had already transformed into the laughter so familiar to me, into that sarcastic laughter. The mightier must crush the weaker. The mightier must crush the weaker. It is what God wants… Twisted in his own blood, he would not shut up. I couldn’t stand that image any longer… I took the knife. He was still on his back, savoring the smell of cigars.

These two figures operate like a duo in a dark noir fairytale, their influence seconded by a pair of men, David and Esteban, whose own shadowed secrets add new, impenetrable veils of mystery to the narrative. Caught in this harrowing transmission is Anastasia, the receptor—a young woman whose internal architecture begins to crack under the weight of the signals she receives, eventually transforming her into a living mirror of the island’s catastrophic history.

Across the island’s divide, in the landscape’s hidden places, with flowers and purposely placed images of elegant rooms, sins were committed in the name of power. These are not merely historical echoes, but active, haunting remnants that define the island’s very soul. Here, I have woven a vein of dark, serrated humor into the psychological dread, a necessary irony that illuminates the absurdity of the characters’ entrapment. It is within these suffocating, labyrinthine halls of manipulation that Anastasia finds herself slowly undone, forced to navigate the blurred, treacherous lines between her own identity and the pervasive toxicity of a place that thrives on the corruption of the spirit.

This is not a novel constructed as a linear progression in which a perpetrator moves from point A to point B and is discovered at point C. It is a non-linear haunting; a circle of obsidian cinematic clues. In this narrative, the beginning is the end. I have navigated these psychological depths with lush language at times and with sparse language at others, refusing to offer easy answers in a space where the boundaries between memory, reality, and illusions are as shifting as the tides. For the reader who seeks to confront the sophisticated, the haunting, and the enduring, Jezebel’s Island is a profound, atmospheric meditation on the devastating cost of the choices we make when we are forced to bear witness to the abyss.

Here is another excerpt from my upcoming novel: Jezebel’s Island: A Mystery Thriller coming late June/early July at Literary Revelations.

Anastasia picked up her courses with indescribable slowness. Her head ached, and the light movements of the palm tress she had followed all afternoon through the windows of the amphitheater had made her nervous. Now the night birds, attracted by the light, crashed dazedly against the glass panes of the halls. They resembled airplanes over which pilots had lost all control, gliding over the mountains.

She found David in a bar near his apartment.

-Have you seen the newspapers?

Anastasia looked at him, smiling without quite knowing why.

-No.

-They eliminated the death penalty.

Anastasia wondered what she cared about all this. David took a seat in the chair across from her, tossing a stack of newspapers on the table.

-Listen to the Government Communiqué.

David leafed through one of the newspapers and began to read. It was a terse announcement, as if the government had reported the launching of a new ship into the water, something quite common on the Island. The death penalty was replaced by imprisonment, the duration of which depended on the seriousness of the act committed. David looked at her.

-What do you think?

-They will need new prisons. Let’s see where they will get the money to build them.

-Anastasia, please!

-I don’t know, David, believe me. I never thought of this.

Anastasia remembered Jezebel again dressed in that beautiful purple silk dress. She felt Armando’s glance. Did Armando say something? No, certainly not. Yet it seemed as though he had. Yes, he must have said something to her, to which Jezebel consented. Or perhaps not.

She began to read.

The Captain’s widow finally granted reporters a minute.

Ten minutes after the government announced the abolition of the death penalty, one of our reporters, who happened to be in the vicinity of the former governor’s house, managed to get some information from his widow. The conversation was recorded without the approval of the interlocutor. We assume full responsibility for the illegal recording of this conversation and its publication.

The reporter was there purely by chance? A doubt and frustration came over her, but she read on.

R. Madam, what was your reaction to the Captain’s announcement of the introduction of the death penalty?

J. I never meddled in their governance affairs.

R. Okay, but you must have had some reaction.

J. My husband acted as he saw fit.

R. Madam, please, the former Governor’s decision constituted an attack on our freedoms.

J. Do you consider that a proven criminal can be guaranteed his freedoms?

R. No, not that. But why should passing the mountains be considered a crime?

J. It was already considered as such upon my husband’s assumption of power.

R. Of course. But it was not punished so severely. The death penalty constituted the total severance of ties with the other side of the Island.

J. And the 20 years of incarceration now constitute the reestablishment of links with the other part of the Island?

R. No, but it is bearable.

J. Is there anything here that is truly bearable?

I had a maid to care for the house, to cook and wash. I still remember the scent of pine that drifted through the open windows. Ingrid sent postcards with short messages: All is well, Jezebel. She played my role better than I did myself. It only proves how often we are more others than ourselves. She loved a pair of my shoes—antelope leather, turquoise, with high heels—and once confessed that, unable to wear them in public, she put them on at home while smoking cigarettes she rolled herself from the Captain’s cherry-scented tobacco.

We soon reached an impossible moment, when one of us had to disappear. Together we decided it would be the Captain. You remember, Anastasia, what Armando told you: that what he could never forgive me for was my failure to carry out the plan to kill him. He was right. I know he told you. He confessed it to me himself.

I know you have doubts. I know that life beyond the mountains has become an obsession for you. Let us speak of it. Please come and see me.
