Why the Competition Is So Intense
Household Dominance: Bestselling giants release book after book, year after year. They occupy the limited physical shelf space in bookstores and dominate the algorithms on digital storefronts, leaving very little oxygen for new voices.
Insatiable but Picky Readers: Thriller fans consume books at an incredible rate, but they are also highly critical. They are deeply loyal to their favorite authors and hesitant to spend time or money on an unproven writer unless the book comes with immense hype.
The publishing industry often demands a predictable formula for thrillersโa fast, linear race to the finish line to catch a readerโs attention on page one. But when I set out to write Jezebel’s Island, I knew I wanted to create something that broke those rules entirely, penetrating a deeper, shadowed lineage of storytelling: the Literature of Enigma.
Breaking into the thriller market is notoriously brutal for a debut novelist because the industry is highly risk-averse. When you refuse to write a paint-by-numbers book, you are already fighting an uphill battle. But when your literary masters are John Fowles, Jorge Luis Borges, and Gabriel Garcรญa Mรกrquez, the challenge doubles. You are no longer writing a detective story or a math problem; you are operating in a world of magical realism, shifting identities, and existential puzzles.
Instead of an instant, uniform chase sequence, Jezebel’s Island first painstakingly constructs a surreal psychological labyrinth. It creates an atmospheric world where the beginning greets you at the very end, and every detail tests the architecture of human consciousness. From My Desk to Times Square: A Note of Gratitude and Glamour
Sometimes, the journey of an author feels like a deep, introspective echoโit resonates in the countless hours spent honing a line of poetry or in the profound solitude of searching for that elusive word. Yet, it is with immense excitement that I share a truly surreal moment: thanks to the generous recognition by the Professional Organization of Women of Excellence Recognized (P.O.W.E.R.), which has honored me as Women of the Month (with an interview to be featured soon in their magazine), my work is set to shine bright on a billboard in the vibrant heart of Times Square this September!
It is a glamorous, bright stage, a stark contrast to the quiet, introspective spaces where my books are born. I find myself feeling deeply humble.
I see this achievement as a remarkable milestone, yet I refuse to regard it as my final destination. Rather, I perceive it as a powerful moment of visibility for the profound themes I have passionately delved into in my books:

Hikari’s paintings and tanka in “Haiku and Tanka: Lull, Harmony and Power in Japanese Art” help so much my career and I am deeply grateful to her.

I had a maid to care for the house, to cook and wash. I still remember the scent of pine that drifted through the open windows. Ingrid sent postcards with short messages: All is well, Jezebel. She played my role better than I did myself. It only proves how often we are more others than ourselves. She loved a pair of my shoesโantelope leather, turquoise, with high heelsโand once confessed that, unable to wear them in public, she put them on at home while smoking cigarettes she rolled herself from the Captainโs cherry-scented tobacco.
We soon reached an impossible moment, when one of us had to disappear. Together we decided it would be the Captain. You remember, Anastasia, what Armando told you: that what he could never forgive me for was my failure to carry out the plan to kill him. He was right. I know he told you. He confessed it to me himself.
I know you have doubts. I know that life beyond the mountains has become an obsession for you. Let us speak of it. Please come and see me.

Takano Mutsuo (born 1947 in Miyagi Prefecture) is one of the leading voices in contemporary Japanese haiku.
Today, Mr.Takano serves as President of the Modern Haiku Association and Director of “the Museum of Contemporary Japanese Poetry, Tanka and Haiku”.
His work is widely regarded for its emotional depth, imagistic intensity, and its ability to transform personal and regional experience into universal poetic expression.
After experiencing the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake firsthand, Mr Takano composed a series of powerful โdisaster haikuโ that confronted loss, trauma, and resilience with unflinching clarity.
These poems were collected in his acclaimed volume “Yorozu no Hane -่ฌใฎ็ฟ -“(Ten Thousand Wings), which received major literary honors including the Yomiuri Prize for Literature and the Dakotsu Prize-่็ฌ่ณ-.
