A gift from Hikari for my birthday, and my thanks to her for her generosity and love

My dear followers and subscribers,

I hope everyone is doing well. Have a beautiful new week.

I would like to share with you a beautiful gift from Hikari, a fabulous Japanese painter, that she sent for my birthday. I am deeply grateful for her generosity.

A gift from Hikari for my birthday

A splendid painting and tanka:

Tanka by Hikary

fruits ripen gently
dogwoods bloom in autumn light
graceful, strong, and still
we vow to shape what will be
a new age born from our hands

โ€ปDogwoods are considered a symbol of ‘gratitude’ and ‘U.S.-Japan friendship.’

This is because, after Japan gifted cherry trees to Washington, the U.S. returned the gesture by sending dogwoods to Japan.

A story for my dearest Hikari

At the edge of the garden, where the last light of day trembled on the petals of a single lily, she stood watching the horizon fade. The air was still, as if the world itself had paused to listen. Even the evening birds, once busy with their songs, had fallen silent.

Then her footsteps were soft on the path, carrying the scent of rain and earth.

The lily bent toward her, a pale silhouette against the dimming sky. It seemed to bow, not from the weight of its bloom, but in reverence. She smiled faintly, tracing its curve with her eyes. โ€œItโ€™s as if it knows,โ€ she whispered.

โ€œThat beauty doesnโ€™t need to speak,โ€ the lily said. โ€œThat even silence can be full of color.โ€

The lily reached for her hand, and in that touch, something shiftedโ€”the dusk seemed to breathe again. The world, quiet and waiting, unfolded around them in shades unseen: the soft gold of forgiveness, the deep green of memory, the tender blush of hope.

A new world was bornโ€”one that asked for nothing but presence and offered everything in return.

Haiku and Tanka: Lull, Harmony, and Power in Japanese Art by Hikari and Gabriela Marie Milton โ€“ What to expect and a Surprise

My dear followers and subscribers,

This post will explain what to expect from Haiku and Tanka: Lull, Harmony, and Power in Japanese Art by Hikari and Gabriela Marie Milton, forthcoming from Literary Revelations.

I want to make it clear from the beginning: Hikariโ€™s fabulous contribution is much bigger than mine. She painted the art and wrote the tanka. I only wrote the foreword and corresponding haiku, approaching her paintings from a different point of view.

So letโ€™s start, because at the end I have a surprise for you.

Lull, Harmony, and Power in Japanese Art by Hikari and Gabriela Marie Milton

Trim: 8X10 inches
Text: English-Japanese
Amazon premium paper glossy
Foreword and bios in English and Japanese
Hardcover and paperback

The novelty brought by the book – Different interpretations of the same image

Hikariโ€™s vibrant brushstrokes capture emotions and moments in time, while her tanka adds layers of meaning that resonate deeply with each piece. My haiku serves as a reflective lens, offering a different perspective on the same visual stimuli. This interplay between our approaches shows how art can be perceived through varied lenses, highlighting the beauty and meaning of our individual interpretations.

In 2003, when my publishing house, Literary Revelations, was still in its infancy, fate brought me to Hikari through a dear friend. The moment I laid eyes on her paintings; I was utterly captivated; they were a breathtaking homage to Japanese art. Each piece resonated with an ethereal beautyโ€”pastels blending seamlessly with the elegance of fans and the grace of swords. It felt as though time stood still for those few seconds as I absorbed the profound artistry before me. Hikariโ€™s work transcends mere aesthetics; it tells stories steeped in tradition and culture, inviting viewers and readers of tanka into a world where every brushstroke holds meaning.

This encounter ignited a spark within me โ€“ a desire to collaborate on a project that would not only showcase Hikariโ€™s incredible talent but also convey my unique vision of the art of haiku. Hikari is Japanese, and she spent her young years in Europe. I am a European who now lives in the US. Together, we decided to create something extraordinary that honors both her heritage and my interpretations of the art of haiku.

In the name of our friendship, HAIKU AND TANKA: LULL, HARMONY AND POWER IN JAPANESE ART was born.

[from the foreword]

When you open the book, here is what you will find [the margins will not be there]

English translation of my haiku: Naoki Kimura.

Surprise

Hikari has painted a new fabulous piece for you and written a new tanka. I just wrote a corresponding haiku. Those pieces will not be included in the book.

HIKARI โ€“ TANKA

you walked away then
a new season took its place

your shelter was but a show

Basque Lore – Witch (Sorginak)-Short Prose – Poetic Prose by Gabriela Marie Milton

Basque Lore – Witch (Sorginak)-Short Prose – Poetic Prose by Gabriela Marie Milton

Amaia moved as if the earth itself exhaled her name. The cup before her shimmered with fern, salt, and a shard of the seaโ€™s first boneโ€”the one that once wrapped around her ankles like a lover unwilling to let go. She broke the root of a tree between her fingers, and the scent of sap rose, thick and sweet as memory.

Her dress slipped from her shoulders, pooling at her feet like dusk surrendering to night. Naked, she began to danceโ€”slowly at first, then with the rhythm of wind through stone, of rivers through veins. The air bent toward her, the mountains listening. Mist gathered around her skin, luminous and alive, her hair trailing down her thighs like spilled ink.

We were children, hidden beneath the bed, breathless. Through the slats, we saw her summon the world back to itselfโ€”one movement, one whisper, one trembling note at a time.

Sacred Autumn – short prose, poetic prose by Gabriela Marie Milton

Sacred Autumn – short prose, poetic prose by Gabriela Marie Milton

Those nights of autumnโ€”when the chill did not wound but healed, when the air itself seemed to breathe through us, cooling the fever of our restless hearts. Our eyes, heavy with the weight of constellations, closed like petals surrendering to the dusk. The city stirred beneath our footsteps, its silence trembling awake, its shadows turning to watch us pass.

Your lips traced, in the tender blindness of night, the outline of my fingers as though reading a forgotten scripture.

And in those evenings, we learned what few ever doโ€”that desire, once it transcends the body, becomes sacred. We had crossed that invisible threshold where touch dissolves into essence, and what we shared was no longer flesh, but the luminous echo of it.

Haunted – Poetic Prose by Gabriela Marie Milton

Haunted – Poetic Prose by Gabriela Marie Milton

The streets remember you, every cobblestone etched with the memory of your footsteps, as if the earth itself had been branded by your presence. It’s been three years, yet the imprint of your steps lingers, a haunting echo that refuses to fade. I recall the way we’d dance in the empty streets, lost in the mystic glow of a sunset that unraveled itself just for us. The world melted away, leaving only the soft whisper of our footsteps and the fading light.

You vanished around the corner, turning left into the fading light, and I followed, my heart racing. But when I turned the street was deserted, the silence palpable. Yet, I could still feel the resonance of your steps, the vibrations of your presence lingering in the air. The distant chime of church bells pierced the evening air, and as the darkness gathered, it felt like the very shadows were alive, swirling around me like a shroud. In that moment, I was consumed by the ache of your absence, the longing to be reunited with the ghost of our past.

A beautiful painting from Hikari for me and a poem by me – Gabriela Marie Milton – for Hikari

My gorgeous followers.

I was absolutely overwhelmed with joy when I learned that Hikari had crafted a stunning piece of art just for me. Her incredible generosity and unmatched talent brought tears to my eyes. The way she wielded those masterful colors struck a chord deep within me, igniting an emotional blaze that I couldn’t contain. I wept, and in the throes of that powerful inspiration, I penned a heartfelt poem dedicated to Hikari.

Painting by Hikari

Poem by Gabriela Marie Milton

Concentrated smell of roses
Blooms in the night of white spirits
Heavy perfume on midnightโ€™s skin
Thorns soft like tongues in prayers

Why do you think my love
You know the secret language of roses โ€“
The secrets they carry in soft petals’ glow.
The legend speaks of tears and blood
Of the day when the Goddess ripped her clothes
In the bourns-
Who told you, darling that roses are love
They are nightingales caught in blue fingered thorns

Gabriela Marie Milton and the Rise of Literary Revelations- feature in ArtistHighlights – A House That Defied Expectations

Good morning my dearest fallowers,

Your support through your likes and purchases fuels the very essence of Literary Revelations, and words fail to capture the depth of my gratitude for your unwavering encouragement. Thank you!

Gabriela Marie Milton and the Rise of Literary Revelations- feature in ArtistHighlights

Poet and editor Gabriela Marie Milton built Literary Revelations into a press where art, literature, and vision converge.

In literature, certain turning points are marked not by institutions or corporations, but by individuals who dare to reshape the field. For Gabriela Marie Milton, that turning point came in 2022. Already an acclaimed poet and editor, she launched Literary Revelations Publishing House, guided not by the marketโ€™s appetite for speed but by her own belief in beauty, precision, and timeless artistry.

Within just a few years, her vision transformed from an idea into a recognized publishing force, one that challenges assumptions about what independent presses can achieve.

A Poet at the Helm

Unlike many publishers who begin with business strategies, Gabriela began with lived experience. She had walked the path of an author herself, facing the highs of bestseller recognition and the challenges of navigating an increasingly crowded literary marketplace. This perspective shaped her belief that true publishing success lies in careful selection, not in volume.

Her dual role as poet and publisher gives her house a distinctive character: each book is approached as a work of art rather than a product. Christina Schwarz, author of the New York Times bestseller Drowning Ruth, captured Gabrielaโ€™s creative essence when she observed her โ€œlush language and lavish imageryโ€ that โ€œevokes a fantastic world ripe with emotion.โ€ That same ethos now informs every publication from Literary Revelations.

A House That Defied Expectations

The story of Literary Revelations is one of surprising acceleration. New presses often struggle for visibility, but Gabrielaโ€™s commitment to excellence allowed her to establish credibility almost immediately. The anthologies Petals of Haiku and Tranquility: An Anthology of Haiku not only reached bestseller status on Amazon but also received international acknowledgment, entering the Museum of Haiku Literature in Japan.

The placement of Petals of Haiku and its cover artwork in the Treasure House of the Rinsenji Temple further illustrates the extraordinary trajectory of the press. These honors reflect not only the skill of the contributing poets and artists but also Gabrielaโ€™s curatorial eye.

Crossing into Visual Arts

What distinguishes Literary Revelations is its refusal to confine itself to one form. The forthcoming art book Lullascapes in Light and Shadow by Naoki Kimura highlights this. Already exhibited at the Tokyo Hilton Hotel, the project demonstrates how the press bridges poetry, literature, and visual art.

This expansion is not diversification for its own sake. Rather, it reflects Gabrielaโ€™s conviction that all artistic mediums can illuminate one another, and that readers deserve access to the fullness of creative expression.

Literary Revelations Wins Best Publisher in the USA Award for 2025

Literary Revelations Publishing House has been recognized as the Best Publisher in the USA for 2025, a testament to its commitment to quality, innovation, and artistic vision. Under the leadership of Gabriela Marie Milton, the press has stood out for its unique blend of carefully curated works that span poetry, visual art, and thought-provoking anthologies. With a focus on craftsmanship over quantity, the press has established itself as a leader in the literary world, challenging conventional publishing norms. This prestigious award underscores the dedication to sustainability, artistic excellence, and cultural engagement that sets Literary Revelations apart in the industry.

Beyond Books: Building a Literary Community

Publishing is central to Literary Revelations, but its activities extend far beyond print. Through the Literary Revelations Journal, Gabriela and her team maintain a curated platform where poetry, short prose, interviews, and visual art come together. The inclusion of writers such as Gaetano Camillo, nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature, underscores the journalโ€™s standing in the global literary conversation.

The press also fosters community by organizing poetry festivals in collaboration with radio stations. These events emphasize the living, communal nature of literature and highlight Gabrielaโ€™s desire to keep art accessible to broad audiences.

Why It Matters

In a publishing world dominated by output and algorithms, Literary Revelations stands as a counterpoint. Its focus on artistry, careful editorial standards, and cultural engagement places it in a lineage of presses that influence not just markets but minds.

At its center is Gabriela herself, whose trajectory from author to founder exemplifies the power of vision. Her press demonstrates that publishing, at its best, is not about producing content but about shaping culture.

Looking Forward

With projects such as Lullacapes in Light and Shadow just published and in a few days reaching Amazon Bestseller status, Gabriela is broadening her pressโ€™s impact. The core principle remains: quality over quantity, resonance over immediacy. For readers, writers, and artists, Literary Revelations offers not just a catalog of works but a philosophy of creativity.

PETALS OF HAIKU & TRANQUILITY: TWO ANTHOLOGIES OF HAIKU PUBLISHED BY LITERARY REVELATIONS ARE NOW IN THE MUSEUM OF HAIKU LITERATURE, JAPAN – FIRST POSTED IN LITERARY REVELATIONS

From Petals to Eternity

The journey of โ€œPetals of Haiku & Tranquilityโ€ from concept to publication, and finally to the venerable shelves of the Museum of Literature Japan, is a story of dedication, inspiration, and the timeless pull of art. It is a testament to the enduring power of haikuโ€”to the way a few carefully chosen syllables can bridge cultures, generations, and hearts.

As Literary Revelations stands, โ€œbeyond honored and humbled,โ€ we do so in the knowledge that our work will endure, quietly influencing, gently inspiring, and eternally blossoming in the tranquil halls of the Museum of Haiku Literature.

We thank our magnificent Artist in Residence, Hikari, for helping with the coordination of this project. She is our hero.

More Than a Library: A Center for Study and Support

But the Museum of Haiku Literature is not simply a repository of books. It is a vibrant study center, equipped with modern, well-lighted reading rooms where poets and scholars can linger with texts, tracing the brushstrokes of ancient masters or discovering the voices of contemporary innovators. Here, silence is not emptiness but an invitationโ€”a gentle beckon to contemplate the subtle interplay between nature and language.

As a support center, the museum extends its resources to poets and researchers across Japan, offering advanced title searches and essential photocopying services. These tools, while practical, carry the heartbeat of the institutionโ€™s mission: to make haiku accessible, discoverable, and alive for all who seek its wisdom.

A Welcoming Haven for Haiku Enthusiasts

The museumโ€™s embrace is generous and democratic. It welcomes haiku enthusiasts from every walk of life, providing a learning environment that is as inclusive as it is inspiring. Programs range from immersive introductory lectures on the structure and spirit of haiku, to awe-inspiring exhibitions of tanzaku and shikishiโ€”traditional formats for writing and displaying haiku, their calligraphy as evocative as the poems themselves.

This is a place where a novice can sit beside a master, where the ancient and the emergent meet on equal footing. The museumโ€™s programs foster a sense of community and continuity, nurturing new generations of poets who will carry haikuโ€™s torch into uncharted realms.

The Museum as a Meeting Place for Poets

The Museum of Haiku Literature is, above all, a meeting place: a living crucible where poetic minds converge. Its rooms are not merely spaces but sanctuaries for collaboration and celebration. Here, haiku seminars and study sessions unfold alongside joyous book-signing parties, ongoing group meetings, and an ever-rotating calendar of events. The laughter of shared discovery, the warmth of mutual encouragement, the quiet of solitary reflectionโ€”these are the museumโ€™s daily gifts.

Rooms resonate with the sound of poetic exchange, as verses are read aloud, debated, refined, and cherished. The museum stands as a testament to the enduring relevance of haiku, providing fertile ground for the seeds planted by Literary Revelations and countless other visionaries.

An International Center for Cultural Exchange

Yet the museumโ€™s reach does not end at the borders of Japan. It is an international center for cultural exchange, a bridge uniting lovers of haiku from every continent. Through its programs, exhibitions, and partnerships, it extends an invitation to all who have come to love and appreciate the subtle art of the seventeen-syllable poem. Here, โ€œPetals of Haiku & Tranquilityโ€ finds itself not only among countrymen but in dialogue with the worldโ€”its themes resonating in myriad languages, its insights universal in their appeal.

To be included in this global conversation is to embrace both responsibility and opportunity. The anthology now stands as ambassador, carrying with it the hopes, dreams, and creative possibilities of its contributors and its publishers.

The Lasting Impact: Preserving Haiku for Future Generations

The preservation of โ€œPetals of Haiku & Tranquilityโ€ within the Museum of Haiku Literature ensures that its words are not ephemeral notes lost to the wind but enduring petals, pressed onto the pages of history. Future generations will turn to these works, finding not only inspiration but also a sense of belonging to a grand traditionโ€”one that stretches back to Bashลโ€™s frog leaping into an ancient pond, and forward into the unknown beauty of tomorrow.

For Literary Revelations and its team, this is both a poetic and practical triumph. Their anthology takes its place among the immortals, a cherished voice in an ever-evolving chorus, a living emblem of what can be achieved when humility meets vision.
