Gabriela Marie Milton – Unmasked Haiku

high fever—
on the window
hand traces

anger—
veins thicken
on your temples

Commentary

What is Unmasked Haiku? Unmasked haiku, as I define it, strips away artificial nature tropes and decorative padding to expose direct human vulnerability turning the view from outside inside the human soul. It is a contemporary sub-genre focused on emotional truth, memory, and raw psychological reality, letting space, breath, and unvarnished language carry the quiet weight of the human experience.

On the Universality of Haiku: Poetry knows no geographic borders. The claim that non-Japanese poets cannot write authentic haiku is absurd. Having curated fine-art anthologies featuring thousands of haiku from poets around the globe, I have seen firsthand how this form resonates across every culture. While haiku originated in Japan, its core power lies in capturing precise, felt moments of human existence—a capacity that belongs to all of humanity. True art transcends national boundaries, belonging to anyone willing to observe deeply and speak with honesty.
