Knowing – poem/poetic prose by Gabriela Marie Milton

Around me “all-knowing” people. Happy because they think they know. Yet what brings them happiness is what they do not know. Ignorance repeats itself with the precision with which Big Ben tells the time.

These days the child has an imaginary friend called Li Boo. One night an avocado seed crawled on the north wall of the mansion, reached the roof, and bloomed to the sound of a fanfare that happened to go by. Li Boo came out of the bloom, wrapped in sea silk, blueberry eyes, strawberry lips gasping for moonlight.

Back in our bedroom I throw at you stars dressed in chiffon skirts.  Roads toward tomorrow break the walls.  The air smells mastic, cyclamen, and rockroses: the smell of the Corsican maquis; the essence of Corsica.  Sirens.  Homer’s Odyssey. Occupations. Feuds. Purification of Sunday’s water.

Another fanfare goes by. A lizard shakes her head pointing toward the West. Your raspy voice turns toward the South. It flickers in pine trees. It slithers in the white sand. It goes beyond the taste of the daily bread.

Li Boo, sweet tears on his cheek, salt and rose petals in his boots, disappears into my consciousness.

I know nothing. Another claim to fame. Did you smile, my love?

  6. There are vague moments unique in poetic prose – Questionable? Actionable? Poetry suffers from its very words, as in impressionism a thing must not need a name to be described. Am I the only one to spot the Big Ben oxymoron in the opening paragraph? While accurate it is more a model of omnipresent consistency than atomic accuracy. Nice work!

      A combination of contradictory or incongruous words – cruel kindness – is indeed an oxymoron.
      If the so called oxymoron you are referring to is – The Big Ben is more a model of omnipresent consistency than an atomic accuracy – then there is no oxymoron. The symbol – omnipresent constancy – does not contradict the fact that Big Ben tells the time. There is no contradiction here. Perhaps that is why nobody noticed. Here is a famous Shakespearean oxymoron if you wish: “Parting is such sweet sorrow.”

  8. This is enticing, full of wonderment and incredible imagination. Only you come up with such a mystifying and beautiful use of the imagination. You could write a children’s book with just this one idea, (below). Yet you place many a seed here to grow and leave for the reader to interpret. Just amazing writing! BRAVO

    This is beautiful and I love the imagery. What I love to most, is you always make me sit with words and think leaving me curious and joyful. I love little Li Boo your friend. Knowing and unknowing in question and these lines are beautifully described… little Li Boo for sure must have needed to hide. 💖😂🥰🥰

As usual….this transported me on so many levels. I read it slowly twice. My heart is overcome. Chillbumps, my childhood friend, danced into the stars as well…I also know nothing and spend much time marveling.     Today, I found that you had visited and read several of my stories.
    I don’t know how you found me but I’m very pleased that you did and I wanted to both thank and welcome you to my collection. I hope you found something to laugh at or be inspired by.
    I see that you’re a poet and this always leaves me fearful because as I like to say, I lack the poetry gene and thus often just don’t get what is being said.
    That said, I do know that poetry often focuses on creating vivid images which is what I try to create with many of my stories.Perhaps we can enjoy some common ground together.
