I am thrilled that my poem “A Night of Marble and of Gingerbread” was included in Hebe to Hades, A Free Verse Revolution Anthology.
Thank you to Kristiana, the editor of this wonderful volume.
A Night of Marble and of Gingerbread by Gabriela Marie Milton
on the top of the mountain
the pines silhouette against the whisper of the rocks
the night is cut from marble, and from gingerbread
the wind stops on a branch touched by a naked star
I take the measure of that which forever youth gives
red poppies that never wither
seeds that never impregnate the ground
a love that still plays with toys,
and lights candles in a Christmas tree in the middle of
the moon is mortal and concerned with trivial matters
and so am I
how many know that you are the bud of incest and
how many know your child’s eyes witnessed so many
filled with pain, you stop growing up, isn’t it so?
oh, don’t cry
here is my impermanent heart
wear it for one day
in the morning you will see the old oak dying in the rain
at noon butterflies will sit on your hair
in the night a Lethean forgetfulness will lecture on the
beauty of transitory love
kisses will feel like honey on the tongue
the breath of love will rest on your skin
you will grow up
you do not want your forever youth back?

All the other beauties aside — the flow of emotion, the archetypal deep dive, the beautiful injunction at the end — all that aside, the juxtaposition of marble and gingerbread alone makes me sit back and ponder, throwing out threads of wonder.

Oh gosh! ABSOLUTELY my pleasure!!! Love You right back, beautiful!!! ❤️❤️❤️!
Dearest Gabriela, first my congratulations on the publication of this intriguing poem, that plays with the reader and teases them down through its lines. I love this description of any indescribable night .”the night is cut from marble, and from gingerbread” so gorgeous, stately and full of sweet delights.. Staying too young forever..is a curse… Hebe, in all her youth, told you so:) So many lines and use of your beautiful language…Your language should be called just Gabriela and those who speak and read it it, are true and utterly lost romantics. Hypnotic writing ❤️🤗🌹🌷
Oh dear..it seems this is the second time this week, WordPress has eaten my comment dearest Gabriela.. From the title,”the night is cut from marble, and from gingerbread” and the first taste of your poem, I am once again captivated… Eternal youth sounds like a curse if we have not learned the wisdom to celebrate every stage, every moment..and all our roles in Life… I look back fondly on my own and now in this stage, I have been lucky enough to have met you.. a poet I so admire and your poetry that takes me out of myself, and shows me the magic of …..everything.. For everything you write about, every word you chose, opens my own senses and makes me see the depth of words made real., until I live in each line, like a one-act play directed by you, dearest poet…Alf mabrook! My sincere congratulations for your latest published beauty.
Thank you very much Aruna.
