the miracle of you – poem by Gabriela Marie Milton

The Fisherman and the Syren (1856–1858), Frederic Leighton.

the miracle of you

the moon’s right-hand
pours soul into my flesh
pigeons’ wings bring scents of lilac blooms
the air gets drunk with poetry
statuary women of the water
flaunt their hair

within the loneliness of you
my heart
rotates five equinoxes on a wooden spindle
your eyes pour flesh into my soul
my body germinates the sounds of growing leaves
I wash my hands into the waters of Guadalquivir
in the scented night of those who never sleep
I say
I love you
and in one single breath
our wedding is transformed
in an enraptured death

was it the moon?
was it the morning dew?
perhaps it was the miracle of you

Poem included in my book Passions: Love Poems and Other Writings, Amazon available here.

  1. I have so many favorites but it is difficult with your books, Button, because after you read them more than once they all become that way. You always pick the most beautiful artwork to add to the beauty of your work as well.

“your eyes pour flesh into my soul
my body germinates the sounds of growing leaves
I wash my hands into the waters of Guadalquivir
in the scented night of those who never sleep”

These lines leave the reader with their mouth open, wondering how such lines came into existence, and making one strongly desire to read more. Everything you write is also so thought provoking, at least to me, even after I have read a piece before I start to wonder about each line, almost like a study. Beautiful.

    Sending my love, Honeybun xoxoxoxo

    1. Bo, thank you so much. I am glad you enjoyed the read. You know the drill. I am thinking about you and of course I want to know how you and your mom are doing. I am waiting for news. Only if you feel like.
Sending love and a big kiss for little B.

      1. I don’t know if you saw my replies yesterday (it was weird, though, you were in spam and I don’t see you in my comments now, though I approved them.)
We’re doing ok. It’s been better for a couple days now, which is a relief. However, we’re all still pretty down. The fatigue and drowsiness are overwhelming.

      2. Bo, I did not see the reply. I was probably in your spam because when I commented I came to you via Eric’s site. That is my way of reaching you these days. I go to Eric’s site and I click on your comments.

I am glad she is having some good days hon. What else can I say hon? Hang in there. Sending good wishes and love to everyone.
        xoxo

  3. Of course, my dearest Gabriela, the entire poem is a masterpiece; and, yet these lines here are even more to me,
    “I say
    I love you
    and in one single breath
    our wedding is transformed
    in an enraptured death

    was it the moon?
    was it the morning dew?
perhaps it was the miracle of you”

    How very beautiful dear Gabriela!
This is so luscious, and mystifying.
“the air gets drunk with poetry”
    Amazing.
And then the lyrical lines towards the end, magnificent.
This must have been one of your few poems that rhyme, and it is just so so wonderful. I love how you have written this. Just when I thought your poetry couldn’t get better…
