In times of fortune and misfortune I am always at the mercy of silence. Perhaps because I was born on an island where seldom does anything happen.

Yesterday the water and the light invaded my tongueโ€™s buds, and I was forced to look at myself upside down. I could see the splendor of a naked butterfly ready to mate. Do you know for how long do two butterflies stay together? Sixteen hours. The exact time we spent together in the silence of the island.

Suspended in the between times neither of us moved. No cosmic sacrifice happened. No driving force was brought to life. No blood interfered between …. please continue reading at MasticadoresUSA.

  1. You’ve woven interesting images, but rather sad at the same time. Speaking of 16 hours, when Laurie and I were marred we went to Mazatlan for our honeymoon. All the travel arrangements were made for us as a gift. We rode the train from Nogales, Mexico to Mazatlan. How romantic, right? The travel agent said the train had a dinning car and everything we needed. We got suspicious when the other passengers showed up with food and water. There were no amenities on the train. We rode 16 hours with no food or water. I have made all my own travel plans after that experience. Give Maya and Seรฑor Churchill big hugs for me.

    1. Timothy, thank you for sharing with me the story of your honeymoon.
“We rode the train from Nogales, Mexico to Mazatlan.”
“We rode 16 hours with no food or water.” Why did you need food and water? You had Laurie. I think that’s romantic but that’s me ๐Ÿ™‚ Probably I am the only person in the world that thinks so.
Maya and Seรฑor Churchill thank you kindly. They are sending love to you and Laurie… and to the kitties.. and to the owls… to everyone.

      1. The idea was romantic. The reality of the train was not so romantic. We were prepared for the 16 hours that turned into 18 hours ride back, so it was much more romantic and we partied with other newlyweds we had met in Mazatlan. Then there was frantic, high speed race back to Tuscon. We got to the checkin as the plane was backing out to the taxiway. They stopped the plane, rolled out stairs, and we boarded with our suit cases that should have been checked. We were dirty and smelly from being on the train for 18 hours. That was 39 years ago. The airlines won’t do that these days.

      2. I am smiling. I understand it must have been difficult in certain instances but there is so much love in your story; the beginning of 39 year of love. I’ll drink for you and Laurie. Here is to another 39.

  2. Wow, this is not only new to hear but so thought provoking and beautiful Gabriellaโฃ๏ธ
    These lines
“Behind the clarity of your face, my face appeared, then yours came behind the clarity of mine, and everything went like in a surrealist dream inverted upon itself.

At the end of the sixteen hours the sea washed us away.

I forgot to tell you. Butterflies always die.”

Makes on thing ….Life is short… but 16 hours.. wow.

  3. You know, no matter how much I read you, I never ever fail to be awed by the beauty of your writing. Your blend of profound and surreal, of love and tragedy. It is always, always, breathtaking. Your final line is a magnificently inevitable ending – great things after all, always come to an end (like the poetic prose itself). But I also love what you said about light, I love the contrasts.

โ€œFor the first time we decided to seek the mysterious in the light and not in darkness.โ€

You will never convince me youโ€™re not a poetic genius, sorry, not sorry ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ˜‚. Dreams of Hawaii again tonight, ok? ๐ŸŒบ๐ŸŒธ๐ŸŒบ๐ŸŒธ๐ŸŒบ๐ŸŒธ

    1. Thank you so much for your wonderful words Rachel. You left me speechless. I am profoundly grateful to you for the praise. It humbles me beyond words.
“You will never convince me youโ€™re not a poetic genius” Oh, thank you but I am not a poetic genius. You are the poetic genius my fabulous Rachel. My forever fabulous Rachel.

I did not dream of Hawaii. I promise I will do that tonight.

Sending you as much love as a human can send to another.

      Enjoy your day sweetheart.
