My poem The Last Love up at Vita Brevis Poetry Magazine and a Note to My Readers #poetry #published

Dear all,

My poem The Last Love published by Vita Brevis Poetry Magazine:

I eat macaroons in the same coffee shop
Roberto’s guitar sells cheap dreams by the sea
young girls are ready for harvest like flowers of lust
I laugh…
I scratch poetry on a glass
I say the first love is French
you ask how’s the last
it smells raspberries, vanilla, and grass
you touch…

On a different note, I apologize to all my followers for not reading your posts over the past two days. I promise I will do my best to catch up with everyone’s posts as soon as I can.

Work and painful experiences got in the way. As a professor the end of the academic year has always been a humbling and joyous experience. Generally, it takes 2 years to get a Masters’ degree.  After that it takes anywhere between 4-6 years (even longer in some cases) to earn a doctoral degree.

During graduation shaking the hands of my students, looking them in the eyes, and telling them: Congratulations Dr… it was a privilege to have you as my student. It meant the world to me. I did my best to equip you with knowledge and to teach you how to think critically. I encouraged you all along to challenge my thinking.  Now, you are ready. Go out in the world and create new knowledge: knowledge that we all can benefit from. Now, that you are at the same level with me I hope you will do better than I do.  With all my heart I wish you good luck and may your star be the brightest. Each and every one of your victories will speak to me. Each and every one of your victories will prove that you are great and that not even a minute from my countless hours of work during long afternoons and sleepless nights was wasted.  Congratulation Dr…Go for it!

This year none of this will happen in person. My regalia will not leave the closet. It will be a painful experience for me and for my students.

Love to everyone
Gabriela

  1. Beautiful poem, Gabriela. Congratulations on its posting on VB. It is so very sad for you and your students after both you and they have worked so hard, not to have that personal recognition of their accomplishments and the accolades they deserve in the traditions of graduation ceremonies.

    1. Good morning Timothy and thank you so much for your kind words. I missed your posts. They bring so much joy in my life. I will visit soon. Last night I saw the review on Amazon. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I will thank you properly in a few days.
Hugs and kisses to everyone ans again thank you very much for your support.

  2. Good morning G,

This is such a beautiful piece. Congrats on having it published. I love the way you end your poetry with questions that provoke thoughts, mystery, and a desire to read more. Really adored this piece.

The graduation……sometimes, I wonder if thing will ever be the same. Not to say this will never end. I know this too shall pass, but will we be the same? Will hugs, a kiss on the cheek greetings, and handshakes be a thing of the past? After years of social distancing via social media, the reality of true social distancing have left us all with a thirst for contact.

So sorry, for your students and all students around the world. They have worked so hard for this day….. I guess the next graduation ceremony will be extra special for everyone.

I hope you have a chance to look out your window and admire this beautiful world we live in. Have a beautiful day Ms Poetry.

    1. Hola Drew,

I am sorry for my late reply. It’s way past midnight here. You are probably asleep. Thank you so much for the praise Drew. You are kind and supportive. I am humbled by your words and delighted you liked the piece.

I hope everything is ok and on track. My fingers are crossed. You know that.

I saw you posted. I adore that excerpt. It’s fantastic. After your heart surgery everything will be fabulous. You will see.

“sometimes, I wonder if thing will ever be the same. Not to say this will never end. I know this too shall pass, but will we be the same? Will hugs, a kiss on the cheek greetings, and handshakes be a thing of the past?”

I strongly believe in most circles things will change. They will not be the same. I do not think we fully understand the physiological impact this pandemic has had on us. It will take a while.

On a more happy note, I wish you a fabulous day tomorrow. Take care of you. Be well. Be blessed.
      Thinking of you.
      G.

      1. Apologies dear friend.
I am so swamped with messages and phones calls.
Thank you for the care you take in replying to me and everyone else. You are a special Soul.
No, I am afraid things will never be the same. Hopefully, some good will come out of it.
        Thank you for everything.
        xo

      2. Drew. No apologies please. Take care of YOU. I hope everything is on track. Sending you love and good wishes Drew.

      3. Everything ready. No stone left unturned.
Gracias. You refused to let me quit.
        Grateful for that.

Don’t know how long I will be gone. You and your poetry will be missed.
        Stay inspired.

      4. Drew, remember: breathe. YOU will be fine. YOU can do this. I’ll “see” you after the surgery. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Go and hit a home run!
As I said, can’t wait to read your first poem after the surgery.
        Good luck!

    1. Thank you so much for the praise and for your kindness. I appreciate both.
      Best wishes. Stay safe.
      Gabriela

  3. Very wonderful poem, I love so much your fabulous poems!!!
I am very sad for you and your students…you and your students have worked so hard for this special day…😢
I send you a very big hug full of affection, and a lot of happyness, serenity and hope! ♥️

    1. Oh, thank you so much for your praise and constant support sweetheart. I am humbled by every words you wrote. You are a beautiful and talented soul. I am deeply grateful to you

      Gabriela

  4. Oh, Gabriela, my eyes are brimming with tears for you. I can feel how broken you are over this. So many, too many have been so so hurt by what is unfolding in this world. I am truly sorry that something you love to do so much, has been taken from you. BIG (((HUGS)))!!! xoxoxoxoxo

    1. My dearest Amy, thank you for being here and thank you for supporting me. You are right “So many, too many have been so so hurt by what is unfolding” What else can I say?
Sending you flowers, love and good wishes. May you have a fabulous day sweetheart.
      xoxoxo

      1. Your pain reflects mine, not in the same way yet in the ways it does count. We all have to keep living somehow by picking up our brokenness and changing that into light, goodness, and inspiration. It’s OK to feel that brokenness yet we all have to know when to leave it behind in order to move ahead, better for that exact experience that broke us. You have a fabulous day as well, Gabriela. I have plans on getting into my fifth last garden and to edit pictures I took yesterday to pair with my post that hopefully is coming tomorrow. Hang in there! I’m carrying you in my heart!! xoxoxo

      2. My Dearest Amy, thank you for your words of wisdom and kindness. “We all have to keep living somehow by picking up our brokenness and changing that into light, goodness, and inspiration” That is so true.

“I have plans on getting into my fifth last garden and to edit pictures I took yesterday to pair with my post that hopefully is coming tomorrow. ” I can’t wait to see what you have done. Enjoy every minute and bring us beauty.
        xoxoxoxo

  5. Dearest Button I am so sorry for this sadness. I feel like I know your heart from your poetry and it is such a generous and kind one. I can’t imagine what this must have been like and I am so sorry. Teachers and professors are such a gift, work so hard and help to form the foundation of our future going forward. Thanks to all teachers and professors everywhere. I have read this poem before and fell in love with it. Such incredible images and deep feelings in this piece. Your beautiful book is the same. I treasure it. You will be in my thoughts and prayers these difficult days. Love to you beautiful Button from J (honeybun).

    1. Thank you so much sweetheart. You are a gem. We all go through rough times and hope that things will get better. They will eventually. I am glad you remembered the poem honeybun.
You are a wonderful sou. Your kindness and support made a difference in my life. I mean it.
      xoxoxoxo
      G (button)

      1. Thank you sweet Button and you have certainly made a difference in my life. Treat yourself tenderly in the next few days. Love you my friend. 🌺🌸💐❤️💕

      2. Joni, that’s so kind of you. Love you honeybun 💕

    1. Oh, I am glad you remember it and thank Jay. I hope you are well my friend.

      1. I am glad to hear. I am as good as I can be under the circumstances Jay.

      2. Same. Now that things are starting to reopen, I am wondering if I am actually happier just staying home! Lol

  6. Another exceedingly beautiful poem!

This is a very hard time for so many of us.

It is perhaps silly, but I alway reach back to a quote from the Cherokee Chief Lone Watie in the movie The Outlaw Josie Wales … we must all “endeavor to persevere.” It seems to work for me, at least.

    1. Thank you so much Darren. I am thrilled you liked the poem.
“we must all “endeavor to persevere.” Thank you for sending this quote. It’s not silly. It’s wonderful. We all should try.
Sending you good wishes and lots of thanks.
      Gabriela

  7. Another beautiful poem, Gabriela! You words always shine like a bright star on a moonless night. It is with sadness that I read your words about graduation. That is such a pivotal point for any student or professor. The opportunity to mutually return their respect so kindly given throughout their educational years is such a blessing in so many ways. Luckily, because of your gift with words, I know the sentiments will not mean anything less if not given in person. And, though I so dearly love your kind words and loving support regarding my work, I would wait a lifetime for you to read them, resting happily in all the time you have given to me already. Sending love and hopes for the best! ❤🌹🥰

    1. Brad, thank you so much for your beautiful and comforting words. You have a heart of gold. I am going through a rough time. Your words help tremendously. They are such a blessings.
My students used to write thank you notes and thank you cards and leave them in my mail box. Occasionally they will write thank you emails, but most of them prefer to hand-write. It’s more personal. Do you know what they did now? They wrote thank you notes and they took pictures of them. They send me the pictures by emails. Needless to say I was in tears.
Brad: your support and your kindness touches my heart. I want you to know that.
May you have a wonderful day tomorrow. Be blessed. Be happy.
      G.

      1. If a thank you note is the appropriate gift to the professor after learning from them, then I owe you a thousand thank you notes because you have taught me so much. I will always support you and try my hardest to let you now how much your are appreciated and loved! You are my Poetess! ❤🌷🌹🌷🌹

  8. Gabriela, I totally understand the sense of loss without the usual pomp and circumstance this spring. Your poem brought me a smile with its creative ending. God’s peace!

    1. Thank you for your understanding and for the praise.
      Blessings and good health!

    1. Thank you so much, B. I am so trilled you liked the poem.

“And I can understand the sadness when something meaningful is
taken away. ” Somehow I know you do.
You take care of yourself B and I look forward to reading your book.
      Have a wonderful evening.
      xoxoxo

      1. Thank you so much B.
“The book won’t be anytime soon, but I am getting there” That is all I want to hear.
        xoxoxo

    1. I just commented on you post. Congratulations. I saw it and I read it but did not have time to comment. It’s beautiful Bo.
Of course you may ask but privately. I will tell you. I am not going to say more publicly. At this point there are bloggers who bully me and make veiled threats. I kid you not. I may have to make my blog private if that continues. In almost three years of blogging it never happened to me. Well, it happens now.
Take care B, love to everyone, and thank you for your support.

      1. Oh, so sorry to hear that, Gab. Been there. Know how it feels. That’s the reason I went private, and I feel so much better. I and I alone say who can read me. I need to be sure they don’t represent a threat, and only then can I share details from my life.

Who loves reading you will still follow you.
Take care, please. People can be nasty.

      2. Thank you so much for being supportive BO. Yes, If the threats don’t stop I will make these blog private.
        You guys enjoy your afternoon.
        xoxoxo

      3. you are both amazing writers and beautiful people, how anyone can try to destroy your confidence in yourselves is totally beyond me. love dale xxx

      4. Oh Dale, thank you from the bottom of my heart. I don’t understand that either. But as one of my friends said: how could you understand the state of mind of a person who wants to destroy when you never wanted to do anything like that?
Dale thank you so much for your support. It means so much to me. Have a wonderful weekend 💐
        G.

  9. G you are an amazing writer and we all appreciate anytime you come to visit! You are always so encouraging! Thank you, for being so generous and kind.
I’m sorry graduation is this way this year, but if your blog is any indication (I know it is) what you have invested in your students will have a major impact on them for the rest of their lives.
    Blessings.

    1. Nico, thank you so much for your unbelievable comment. Your kindness is beyond anything I can hope. “Thank you, for being so generous and kind.” If I really am as you say Nico it’s because I do not really know any other way of being. God had mercy on me. I do not hate people. I do not envy people. Now, as one of my friends who is a psychologist says this not necessarily good all the way down. However, I learned how to live with myself. If I cannot understand hate I leaned how to identify it and how to defend myself.
“what you have invested in your students will have a major impact on them for the rest of their lives.” Thank you Nico. That is what they say. That makes me happy every day.
My best to you and to your lovely wife.
      G.

    1. Once again… thank you. I am so grateful to you for your support. Sending you plenty of blessings.

  10. This is fantastic, congratulations on having it published!

Work sounds very full-on and quite emotional. The fruits of what you’ve achieved and seeing the lives you’ve touched at the end of the year must be very moving, and, hopefully, very positive despite the tinge of sadness, too.

    Caz xx

    1. Thank you so much for the congrats and for your wonderful words. They are a blessing.
” hopefully, very positive despite the tinge of sadness,” In the grand scheme you are right . I needed to be reminded.
      Thank you Caz

      Gabriela

    1. Thank you from the bottom of my heart Luisa. I am humbled by your support.
Sending you love and please stay safe.
      Gabriela.

  11. Such an amazing verse, Gabriela!
I can feel your pain. This may pass but things will never be the same. All I can do is send you virtual hugs.
AND guess what?? I finally have your ebook!! I will be busy for the next couple of days reading my favourite writer so please forgive me if I don’t blog! 😍❤️🌷😘🌷

    1. My dearest Punam, thank you from the bottom of my heart for your kind words.
“This may pass but things will never be the same.” I believe that too. Thank you for the hugs. Right back to you.
“I finally have your ebook!! I will be busy for the next couple of days reading my favourite writer so please forgive me if I don’t blog!” Punam this is one of the most humbling things I read today. I am so grateful to you. You are a gem. I hope someday – sooner rather than later – I will be able to read your book. What a joyful day will be. Bring that joy to me.
Wishing you a day fill with love and sunshine.
      Yours
      G.

        Yours

    1. Thank you so much Java.
I will find happiness in writing for sure.
Sending you love and hugs and thank you for your encouraging words.
      Gabriela

  12. A beautiful poem G. I can feel your sense of loss not being able to congratulate and inspire your students in person. How very sad. They too are going to miss that special moment when all their hard work comes to fruition. 😢

    1. Thank you so much Christine. I am deeply grateful for your words. You are a sweetheart.
I hope everything is ok with you. Now that we reconnected I look forward to reading your beautiful poems again.
      xoxoxo

      1. My pleasure, I am glad to hear that sweetheart.
        xoxoxo

  13. Lord, Gabriela. I am so sorry everything is so bizarre right now. It must be heartbreaking for You and Your students, indeed….what a WONDERFUL feeling it must be to play such a profound role in the journey of so many. I am certain they feel Your Love and most beautiful well-wishes in their hearts. Sending You hugs. And this poem…GOD! I LOVE this! Off to read the rest but You put me there. I feel You could have written this from my mind/heart times I’ve sat and just watched….life. Hoping All of this craziness in the world is behind us this time next year. Stay safe and Rock on with Your beautiful self! OH! And Your poetry book is stunning! Having so much fun reading it! 🤗❤️🌀🙏🏼😊

    1. My Dearest Kathy
You are a sweetheart. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your wonderful words. I feel the same as you do. The word “bizarre” describes plenty of things right now.
“It must be heartbreaking for You and Your students, indeed…” Yes, it is Katy.
“Sending You hugs.” Sending you more hugs.
“I feel You could have written this from my mind/heart times I’ve sat and just watched….life.” Oh, this humbles and honors me Kathy. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. You made my morning.
“Hoping All of this craziness in the world is behind us this time next year.” Sweetheart I hope so too.
“Stay safe and Rock on with Your beautiful self! ” Aw… thank you. This is so much YOU! Your creativity and your enthusiasm! How much I love all this about you.

“And Your poetry book is stunning!” Humble me twice, Katy. Thank YOU! Thank YOU! Thank YOU!
Wishing a gorgeous day to my wonderful and talented Katy.
      xoxoxoxoxo

      1. Awwww. Truly, absolutely my pleasure, Sweet Gabriela! I hope You have a WONDERFUL weekend!!! Thank YOU for all this kindness. Goodness. You just make MY day!!! 🤗❤️🌀🙏🏼😊

      2. And your beautiful heart just made mine Katy. Thank you sweetheart. Enjoy your weekend. I hope you find the comment I left on your most recent post. Love and hugs ❤️🤗🌸😊❤️🤗

      4. My pleasure Katy. I found your comment in my spam folder. Sorry for replying so late.
        Have a fabulous week
        Gabriela

      5. OH gosh! NO WORRIES!!! It actually kindof blows my mind that You are as busy as You are in life and as a writer yet You are so wonderfully, AMAZINGLY supportive and are around as much as You are!!! You never owe me an apology!!! Thank You for Your sweet heart! I hope You have a fabulous week as well! Still just loving Your book. Sat and read a few poems yesterday. They completely fill the heart/soul. Just divine. 🤗❤️😊

  14. Congratulations on the publication of your great poem Gabriela. “harvested” is an interesting choice of word, as harvesting removes the plant (or part of it at least) from the ground and could be seen as cruel when applied to young women. (Some men are, of course cruel) A certain part of the male anatomy might also be compared to a sickle. I hope that, in future you can shake your student’s hands once more. Kevin

    1. Good afternoon Kevin and thank you so much for the congrats. Very interesting interpretation. The image that I had in mind was falling for someone. When you harvest a plant the plant falls.
Indeed I hope that in the future I will be able to slake my students’ hands again. Yesterday I was not so hopeful. Today I am a bit.
      Have a beautiful weekend Kevin.

      1. Ah, I see what you mean as regards falling for someone. It always fascinates me how readers interpret poems as compared to how the poet meant their poem to be understood. But that is, I think one of the joys of poetry. You also, have a lovely weekend Gabriela.

      2. Oh, I agree, it is one of the joys of poetry. It always fascinates me to see how my readers interpret my writings.
I am mesmerized by your interpretations Kevin.
        🤗

    1. Oh, my Queen of Poetry is here. Thank you for your kind words. Sweetheart, I left so many comments on your posts. Apparently they go nowhere. I am going to start twitting them so you can read them.
Sending you love and I hope everything is well with you.
      xoxoxol

      1. I think word press is acting up again because I did not get comments. So sad. But thank you all the same dearest.
Sending you lots of hugs and love. Keep safe, my high priestess of poetry.

      2. My pleasure Yassy. You will always be my Queen of Poetry 🤗🌸🙏💐🌺🌸

  15. Congratulations Gabriela!

It really is a sad situation, for both you and the students. I hope you are feeling better now. Somehow I always feel better after writing down what’s troubling me, I hope it works for you too.

Sending you love and hugs🌹🌹 take care❤

    1. Oh, my dearest Ishita. Kind and wonderful as always. Thank you so much.

“Somehow I always feel better after writing down what’s troubling me, I hope it works for you too.” It generally does sweetheart. I don’t know why is not working well in this case. Perhaps it’s too soon.
Sending you hugs and love and tones of thanks for your kindness.
      xoxoxo

      1. You are most welcome😊

I’ll pray that your worries and pains soon go away. They will, I’m sure. You have a very beautiful soul dear❤

        xoxoxoxoxo

  16. This poem is so far above beautiful, it leaves one speechless, without words to express how these amazing images seep into the heart and mind…
“Like flowers of love…I laugh”. Oh my, you have a way!
Dearest G, I can only imagine how difficult it is not to be able to come before your students and present them with your inspiring words and encouragement, I’m sure their disappointment is deep. It is bewildering and disappointing, heartbreaking. Your speech is wonderful and will never be forgotten by these graduates. You have given your all , congratulations to you and to them. Well done! Much love to you. ❤️xoxoxo

    1. Thank you so much my beautiful Rene. Your words draw lines of happiness in my soul. Your kindness brings me joy.
“It is bewildering and disappointing, heartbreaking.” It is Rene. Thank you so much for your understanding and thank you so much for the congrats. You are wonderful. May your day be filled love and sunshine.
      xoxoxo
      Yours
      G.

      1. Dear G, you are an incredible professor . Your students are so fortunate to have experienced this culmination with your guidance, they will never forget you.
I also want to congratulate you on your Spill Words selection as Poet of the Year, so well deserved.
Sending so much love to you!
        xoxo
        Rene

      2. René you are such a sweetheart. You showered me with compliments today. You know I just want to be your friend. Can I ? I will be honored.

    1. Thank you my dear. I got disconnected from lots of followers too. I don’t know what is going on.

  17. Gabriela, I can only imagine the inspiration and love you give your students. They will feel that in their souls as surely as had you placed a hand on their shoulder and looked them in the eyes. What you wrote here bought tears to my eyes, it’s so beautiful and poignant and heartbreaking. It makes me love and admire you all the more. I think I relate to how your students must feel about you. I’m sending you a hug, and I’m paying no heed to social distancing xoxox

    1. “It makes me love and admire you all the more.” Oh, Rachel you are so sweet. You are putting my broken heart together. Thank you so much for your beautiful words. Now you are bringing tears in my eyes. I got your hug. I am sending you two. No worries. I am still social distancing and still wearing a mask and gloves every time I go to the market. I am not doing too much outing yet.
      Rachel you are really fabulous.
What about a red? What kind would you like?
I just got a message with some pictures and a short video clip from a friend of mine who teaches in Australia. The Pacific looks superb. He is at the beach. It does not look like summer but still everything looks beautiful. You did not talked to me about the ocean in a long time…
      I miss our nightly talks.
      xoxoxo

      1. I miss those talks too, but I treasure every interaction I do get with you. You are a very special person to me, and to many. You will remain in the hearts of your students forever, I have no doubt.
I am so sorry you have missed out on the graduation of your students this year. I think next year will be different. I hope it is.

G, will you share a red with me? How about a Brunello di Montalcino? You can transport us with your words to a Piazza in Siena. Who knows, maybe even Roberto and his guitar may show up. Even so, I’m still not buying his cheap dreams. But I’ll tell you about the Pacific and we can scheme on our next adventure.
I hope you are ok. Are you?
Lots of love to you G xoxox

      2. How about a Brunello di Montalcino? Wow, my dear Rachel it sounds divine. You can drink. I can delight myself in its aroma. Well, I’ll drink a little too.
“You can transport us with your words to a Piazza in Siena? WOW! I am already walking in Piazza del Campo. I am stunned. Siena! I really can’t say why I am stunned here but thank you from the bottom of my heart Rachel. Great guess! Great choice!
“I’ll tell you about the Pacific and we can scheme on our next adventure.” That’s sounds fantastic. I can’t wait.

“I hope you are ok. Are you?” Oh, thank you for asking sweetheart. This morning the sun shines brighter than ever. I am ok. I will be ok.
Lots of love to you too Rachel. Have a beautiful week.
        G.

  18. Beautiful piece of The Last Love….beautiful & heartfelt words to your students….it’s so crystal clear….how you must be feeling this year….emotional moments….your students are blessed to have you as their teacher / mentor….and you’re surely proud of them….touched by them….though differently this time….blessings come in different forms & shapes….Much love Gabriela ❤️

    1. Thank you so much Navin. You are so kind and so wonderful to me. I will to keep your words in my heart forever. I am glad you liked the piece and yes I am going through some emotional moments but aren’t we all?
I just finished reading your piece. Powerful. Beautiful. I left a comment. I hope you get it.
      Much love to you too.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend
